Double Opt-In For WordPress

double opt-in wordpress emailMany, many, many moons ago I spoke about DIY E-Mail Marketing – specifically whether to do it in-house or use a third-party e-mail marketing company.

Rather than re-hash the entire post here, one search term that keeps coming up again and again in my stats is “double opt-in for wordpress” so it appears that there are quite a few people that would rather handle some level of their e-mail marketing in-house.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with this.  There are definately some pros and cons of DIY when it comes to e-mail marketing, but it can be done cleanly if you so desire.

Here are OIBO we use a fantastic little plugin from Watershed Studios called WordPress Email Notification Plugin.  In fact if you look waaaaay up at the top right of the page you’ll see a place where you can sign-up for blog alerts.  I’m running his script on the site.

Here is where the plugin was initially announced on Watershed Studios’ Blog.

The script is very easy to set-up and work with.

What I like most about the script is that it does provide you with a method of double opt-in for your WordPress install.

To manage my subscribers, I click on the WP Manage link and then on “Email Notification”.

The admin area is selft explanatory.  If you’d like to see who has subscribed and confirmed their e-mail subscription, simply click on “Remove Addresses” to get a list of all your subscribers.

Bad Mo!  I didn’t confirm my subscription!

Want to e-mail all your subscribers?  Simple…

Simple, no?

Finally you can set your preferences/settings as well…

The only thing I find kludgy with this great plugin is that if I want to change the content of the message, I need to edit the plugin and make my changes there.  If you’re a  webmaster that does not want to mess with the workings of a plugin, you may not like this plugin.

I find that it is very light-weight and does what I need it to do.  It doesn’t handle any type of tracking etc., but that can be done quite easily.

If you know of a better plugin out there that can handle double opt-in for wordpress, and is (preferably) free – drop me a line so that I can try it out and provide a review here.

Do You Got Rank?

Google Page Rank

So something really weird was going on last night, did YOU notice it?

I’m talking about Google Page Rank.  Last night, if you visited the site you would have seen my page rank having shot-up to 4 (COOL) but this AM when I checked again, I confirmed that it’s still 0 (NOT COOL).

It appears that Google is coming up to a Page Rank update soon.  In fact Daniel over at DailyBlogTips is also talking about this.  Court over at Courts Internet Marketing School is also talking about a possible upcoming Google Page Rank update.

I’m kinda hoping for a Google surprise… but only time will tell.

I’m curious to know whether anyone else out there is seeing oddities with their sites page rank.

Drop a line here, if you’re seeing a page rank update on your site.

Here is an update – got home and did another check of the site, and sure enough it’s showing page rank.  COOL!

Hype Generates More Hype

Grand Theft AutoAre you a gamer?  I’m not but I have many cousins who are.  I also have many friends in my age-group that are die-hard gamers; it’s odd that even their spouses are gamers!

Gamers spend thousands of dollars on their “rigs” – one of the last places I worked, the gamer there routinely would shell out $300 – $1,000 for high-end video cards not to mention all the other “goodies” needed to run games at the highest possible resolution at the best possible speeds.  I mean, the last thing you want is to be playing something like Grand Theft Auto 4 and your system halts because it has to load some graphics.

One thing you will notice about games, like World of Warcraft (WoW), Grand Theft Auto and the like is their staying power.  They just don’t die.  They have cult-like followers that eat, sleep and breathe these games.  They know everything about them.  I swear, if there was a way to hack the games and put their faces on the characters  – they would do it (who knows… there probably is — I’m not a gamer so don’t spend a lot of time on it).

But there is something else you should notice about these games is that there are small industries built around them.  For example, do a search for Grand Theft Auto – in Google there are over 30,000,000 sites indexed for the term Grand Theft Auto (without quotes)!  I’ve spotted maps, additional cars, skins, editors and utilities for the series of Grand Theft Auto games.

Mind you, I don’t have a clue how you would use these and what they are all for — but hundreds of thousands of gamers out there certainly do.

Have you also seen the hype and buzz generated for Grand Theft Auto?!  Here is some information from CrunchGear

That” game comes out today, I think, and one of the best parts of its launch is seeing how the regular, non-gaming press handles it. For example, the New York Times, has a cute little story describing gamers’ “craving” for the game. All the bases are covered, including the numbers (five million copies expected to be sold in the next two weeks; the industry as a whole is already up 63 percent over last year’s numbers), pithy analyst quotes (”People say that if consumers are down to their last $50, the last three things they’ll buy are milk, eggs and video games”), and man-on-the-street perspectives (one college student would give up his cellphone to buy it, but not food—sensible!)

Then you’ve got glowing reviews from the likes of the Chicago Sun-Times and the San Francisco Chronicle, which calls the game a “cultural revolution.” Not sure I’d want to be associated with quite that phrase, but I get what they’re trying to say: the game is big.

And wouldn’t you know, “grand theft auto 4 cheats” is the number one item on Google Trends right now. In fact, three out of the top ten, or 30 percent, are GTA-related.

So you’re probably thinking – what the hell does this have to do with running a internet business?  Well – a lot.

As I mentioned there are small industries built around some of these games.  This is a perfect example of a niche business or niche opportunity.  They would not exist unless the games were out there, and they add additional value to the games by giving the users that play them what they want — the ability to customize the games.

This is nothing new, for those of you out there that remember Doom do you remember all the add-ons you could get for it?  I remember pac-man monsters plus loads of others!

You see this niche business on the Internet today as well, in the form of plug-ins, and widgets for WordPress and popular social media sites like Facebook.  Many of these are free, but if you could build a “must have” add-on and sell it you could effectively monetize your work.  Even if you give it away, the traffic you build to your site would be immense.  The next step, of course, is to monetize that traffic.  Sure AdSense would work — but remember, you are now targetting an entirely NEW group of individuals — the webmaster.

Webmasters needs differ from the average jane/joe.  Most are not going to fall for AdSense — but if you target them with well placed information on related products then you could have a winner.  A few fine examples that I can think of are:

  1. MaxBlogPress (at maxblogpress.com) - they offer several FREE WordPress plugins/widgets and at the same time monetize the traffic to their site effectively by targetting webmasters with tools that they can use.
  2. Semiologic (at semiologic.com) – offers quite a few freebies; but once you download some of their themes and try to access the additional items you see that you need to purchase a license to use them.  Again they’ve targetted webmasters with something specific — not Adsense.

As you build your internet business, consider the niche you are targetting then ensure that you capture that niche by offering relavent advertising and products that will help that webmaster get the most out of their site — most webmasters want to know how to monetize their traffic but this is not the only thing that they want or need.

I will talk about an excellent method for getting into the minds of webmasters in a future post.  If you’d like to get instant notification of the post, just subscribe to my Blog Alerts at the top right of the page.  I don’t spam and you only receive an e-mail when I update the blog.

Anyway before I head out… here is something for my cousins and others that hit this post looking for something related to Grand Theft Auto – CHEAT CODES!

Hype Generates More Hype

Social MediaWow.  Heavy title.  I want to point you in the direction of this great article on TechCrunch.  The post is fantastic, if you want to learn more about where Social Media is heading.

The story is from Morgan Stanley, and well worth the read and view of the slide show.

Here is some summary information:

  • YouTube + Facebook page views > Google or Yahoo page views (and may be bigger than both combined)
  • 6/10 top internet sites are social (youtube, live.com, facebook, hi5, wikipedia, orkut); none were on the list in 2005
  • YouTube has 258 million users, 50% visit weekly or more
  • >50% of Facebook users log in daily, 95% of Facebook users have used at least one third party application
  • Skype revenue is $1.67/user/year, up 9% Y/Y
  • 14 million photos uploaded daily on Facebook
  • Google + Yahoo = 61% of U.S. Online Ad Revenue
  • Google: $4.4b ad revenue in Q4, paid out $1.4 billion to partners
  • Yahoo: $1.6 billion in ad revenue in Q4, paid out $429 million to partners

I think what is a shocker is the first point – YouTube + Facebook page views are GREATER than Google or Yahoo!  Wow.  Is that powerful or what?

IF you still need a clue it means you NEED to have a Facebook page and social media yourself to the world.

Even the 2nd item point should be leading you to taking advantage of social media — the fact that 6 out of 10 Internet sites are social.

The next step for you is use social media to build your business, and convert those visitors into customers of your products.

One of the comments left by a visitor should be on your mind:

Is the traffic and monetisation potential from widgets (and API’s) being underestimated as a trend here, eg, where do RIAs such as Twhirl using Twitters API fit in?

In fact one traffic technique that is most popular is traffic gained from individuals that give away their plugins/widgets for various platforms – WordPress, Facebook etc., With these types of products, it does not necessarily need to be “new” or “unique” — but even significant improvements on what’s out there could spin your sites visitor count like crazy.

A few posts later on there is another fantastic article on Widgets.  The author of the post, Michael Jones makdes an valuable statement – “The top widget providers are proving that widgets can be big business.

I don’t agree that widgets are the “cure” to the recession - but learning to how effectively monetize widgets will help companies build additional income streams.

He also goes on to say:

In April 2007, comScore estimated that widgets reach 177M people every month, or 21% of the worldwide online audience. Currently, only a fraction of widget traffic – perhaps as little as 0.5% – is being monetized. And that 0.5% is being monetized most frequently through traditional CPM models. In order for widgets to pay off in the long term, however, new models are required that will drive revenue beyond the top few widget providers and generate significant returns for all customers investing ad dollars.

…anyway have a read at the story and the comments, they are just as interesting as the story is.

Future Outlook on Social Media – Web Two dot OH!

Have You Already Done Your Best Work?

Interview QuestionsAmong my many responsibilities as a Director of Customer Service is that I’m in charge of HR.  I am responsible to hire, terminate, promote or demote.  I also interview many candidates for positions that are available within my department.

I have a lot of “trick” questions.  I’ll share a few with you then head into my main points with this post.

- If you were an animal, what animal would that be and why?

- How would you react if I told you your interview so far was terrible?

- What can you do for us that someone else cannot do?

But my best trick question is this: Have You Already Done The Best Work You Are Capable Of?

You will not believe the responses I get on this.  Basically there are only two responses you can give… well, maybe three.

It’s either:

  • Yes, I have already done my best work (pretty damn cocky if you say this)
  • No, I have not done my best work (hmmm… so what you’ve done is crap so far?)
  • Combination of both and add – the best is yet to come

How do you think most people answer that question?  It’s almost always either Yes or No.  But the right answer is providing a combination of the both.  I’m not here to teach you how to score an A on your next interview – but this simple question can be applied to your professional, and personal life.

If it is your goal to work a 9-5 job (and there is NOTHING wrong with that, contrary to what a lot of bloggers say) then are you doing your best work possible?  Or are you coasting?  If you’re coasting then I hope you realize that you will stay where you are and never get ahead.  Your job will always suck and will suck more and more each day and your pay will stagnate.  You will never be called upon to take on more challenging tasks, unless someone feels some pity for you and thinks maybe you’ll improve — but more often than not, those pity fcuks are short-lived and you’ll eventually get fired — OR WORSE — ignored in your company.

There is nothing worse than being ignored.

How about in your blogging?  Or in building your internet marketing business?  Are you doing the best work you are capable of?  Why not?  You need to treat your blogging, or your internet marketing business like any other opportunity.  Do a shitty job of it and people will ignore you.  Do a good job, and you will get recognized for your talents and will gain the respect of other bloggers.

When you post on topics that you are not an expert in, are you doing at least some research to ensure that you understand the topic?  Are you writing with a passion?  Or are you writing for the sake of it?  If there isn’t a passion then it will show in your work.

Think back to your early years, when you worked on school projects in a team or independently.  Do you remember the passion you had?  How you wanted to make sure your project was the best?  I see my son approach his school work with this enthusiasm and it revitalizes me.  He genuinely wants to do well, so he works hard.  He is the same way at play, whether he’s playing with his Legos or other building toys.  He wants to show off his best work to his mom and dad.  Each new creation is better than the last one, his best work has yet to come.

You need to approach your life in the same manner.  Whether you decide to go down the 9-5 route, do the best that you can do!  Show your team, colleagues and managers that you have what it takes to get the job done.  Use the same vigor in your online business, or your blogging — show the world what you’re made of.

…by the way, the correct answer to this question (should you ever get it on an interview) is this:

“No, I believe that my best work is still ahead of me.  I am confident in my previous work and tasks, I’ve always performed them to the best of my abilities.  Had I not, then I would never have been considered for more complex tasks and greater responsibilities.  But as I learn more from the people around me, I know that the quality of my work will improve.”

So now let me ask you this – “Have You Already Done The Best Work You Are Capable Of?
