The Forbes Rich List 2009 has been released, and it’s still hot news! We just love to see who are the multi-billionaires on the list, who has rocketed to the top of the Forbes Rich List and who has dropped the most on the rich list.
It is indeed a sad time for the world billionaires. Previously there were 1,125 on the Forbes Rich List 2008, however in 2009 that number has dropped to a mere 793. I feel so sorry for the 332 that didn’t make it.
Do you know who topped the Forbes Rich List this year? Our friend, Bill Gates. Do you know who he beat out for the top spot? Our other friend, owner of Bershire Hathaway Warren Buffett – his fortune fell to a measly $37 billion.
What surprised me is that a drug-trafficker made the list! According to Forbes.com:
Mexico’s most wanted man, “El Chapo”, or Shorty, heads the Sinaloa cartel, one of the biggest suppliers of Cocaine to the U.S. In 1993 was arrested in Mexico on homicide and drug charges. Escaped from federal prison in 2001, reportedly through the laundry, and quickly regained control of his drug trafficking organization, which he still controls today. In 2008 Mexican and Colombian traffickers laundered between $18 billion and $39 billion in proceeds from wholesale shipments to the U.S.
Shorty, an alleged tunnels expert, is believed to have directed anywhere from a third to half of that during the past 8 years.
He was #701 on the Forbes Rich List.
Some other tidbits of interesting information – did you know that…
- New York is the top spot for billionaires? Previously it was Russia.

- Only one member of the exclusive club saw a net gain – that was Michael Bloomberg.
- Who is the youngest billionaire with $2.1 billion? German Albert Von Thurn und Taxis. What does he do? His official title is Prince Albert Von Thurn und Taxis:
The Princely House of Thurn und Taxis is a German family whose fortune derives from their position as hereditary general postmasters of the Holy Roman Empire. As such, the family was a key player in the postal services in Europe in the 16th century. The Thurn and Taxis family remains well known as owners of breweries and builders of countless castles. – from WikiPedia
